' Fulton Lakes Pit
Embankment Specifications and Testing Requirements
' Embankment Materials and Placement
' 1. Materials used in the perimeter embartl~tent adjacent to the slurry wall shall be
inorganic soils containing a minimum of 45% materials passing No. 200 Sieve and no
cobbles larger than 6 inches placed as directed by the Owner. The materials shall meet
the classifications tested by CTL Thompson in their site evaluation of borrow sources.
The Engineer may reject any materials deemed unsuitable for use in the dam
construction.
2. The Interior dike shall consist of zoned materials. The Zone 1 materials for the
impermeable core shall consist of good quality clay shale from the bedrock. The clay
' shale shall have a minimum of 50% fines passing the No. 200 sieve and shall be
reasonably well graded. It shall have a Plasticity Index of 10 percent or greater for the
portion of material passing through the No. 40 sieve. The clay shale shall be disked and
' worked into a uniform plastic material that is consistent with CL material. The clay
shale shall be properly broken down and not blocky.
' 3. The Zone 2 materials in the interior dike shall consist of sandy clay overburdens that
exist on-site and are consistent with the materials tested and used in the slope stability
' analysis performed by CTL Thompson. The material should have a Plasticity Index (PI)
above the "A" line of the Soil Classification Chart.
4. The placement moisture content of materials shall be from 1% below to 2% above the
optimum moisture content as determined by ASTM D 698.
' S. Layers of material shall be spread in layers not exceeding 9 inches in thickness (loose)
and compacted to at least 95% maximum density (ASTM D 698) A compactor shall be
required on each lift with sufficient passes to achieve the specification.
' 6. The Contractor is responsible for preparing a sequencing plan for all fill placement for
acceptance by the Engineer. No contiguous vertical joints between fill sections are
' allowed. The minimum horizontal stagger length between joints is 100 feet. The
parameters for allowing joints and staggered fill sections in the embankment are slopes
no more than 4:1 for connecting fills and no difference in height of 5 feet between fill
' sections aze allowed. All joints between fill sections shall be connected together with
clean fresh material. An existing fill section shall be cut down to fresh material,
scarified and moistened to allow a tight interface with new fill.
7. All lifts shall be placed longitudinally, pazallel to the centerline of the interior dike. No
lifts shall be placed at a slope of greater than two percent. Any cross section the
difference in elevation between lift placements shall not be greater than 24 inches.
8. All lifts shall be scarified to whatever depth is necessary and compacted to achieve
proper bonding between lifts. Any vaziations in moisture outside the specifications
Fulton Lake Embankment Specifications and Testing requirements
9000 - I
