_~_
concepts:
1.) A11 areas to be reclaimed should be shap®d and graded sn that no slopes
will be steeper than 3:1. Where possible, flatter slopes are mt:ch more
desirable. ~•7hen shaping and grading, leave the area with a landform
that will be stable and which will drain naturally into existing drainage
channels vrithout starting any new soil erosion. It might be necessary
to construct a diversion ditch or sin_lar structure here and there in order
to keep rorater from concentrating, to hold runoff water, or to divert it
into existing natural drainage channels.
2,) Due to the severe limitations inherent in a clay surface for establishing
vegetation, a minimum o£ ~ inches of topsoil should be applied over all
areas to be revegetated. Topsoil could be salvaged from the overburden
but in this Casa it appe,~rs as though mostly all top soil will need to
be imported. Apply topsoil after shaping and grading is completed then
till the site to a depth of approximately 6 inches, This will permit
the topsoil to bind with the e~asting soil or clay surface and will
therefore help prevent air pockets an3 topsoil slippage.
3.) Apply fertilizer at a rate of approximately 50 lbs, of available nitrogen
and 50 lbs. of available phosphate (P2Q5) per acre. Time o£ fertilizer
application should be immediately prior to seeding unless eq:ipment is
designed to apply fertilizer during the same operation seed is applied,
4.) Seeding shall be done using a grass drill properly ecu3ppe3 to handle
the seed being planted. The follo;ring seeding mixture is recommended:
SPECIES VARIETY LBS. PiTRE LI~n; SEA/ACRE
i+Iestern wheatgrass Barton or Arriba 6,1y
Side-ea.ts grama Vaughn 1.8
Fubescent wheatgrass Luna 3<6
Indian Ricegrass --- 2.~
5,) Treated area should be mulched using native hay mulch applied at 3000
lbs. per acre o£ air-dry material. At least 50a of t h2 mulch by weight
s'rcould be 10 inches or'mare in length. Anchor the mulch using a straw
crimper or a farm disc with the discs set straight. Cri:cp the material
3 inches into the soil. All operations show d be across the slope,
Other af.proved mulching material such as excelsior matting can be used
in place of native hay mulch,
b,) A11 seeded and treated areas need t.o be protected from livestcck until
grass seeding is firmly established and site is stabilized.
