LOCATION Box 2329 Denver, Co.
ASSISTED BY Arthur Quintana DATE 1-26-?9
* ® INDIVIDUAL ^ GROUP ^ UNIT OF GOVERNMENT
SITUATION: Wayne Spence on behalf of the Denver Brick & Pipe Co;. has reouested
infcrmation relative to soils, vegetation types and reclamation procedures on an
existing clay pit referred to as the "Dawson State Lease", Pit is located on land
owned by the State of Colorado in i~E~ Section 10, TSS, R62W. Approximately 30
surface acres are involved in the mining project.
SUGGESTED SOLUTION(S) Refer to the attached copy of soils map for the area. ihsee
soil types are found in the area around the pit. Also attached are descriptions
these soils. For further characteristics and descriptions of soi7_s in the
im-nediate clay pit location refer to the report prepared by "Thorn EcoloPical Co."
Also refer to this report for ins ornation on native vegetation in area. Since
native vegetation and top soil is stripped during mining activity, thus exposing j
i
a barren clay surface, reclamation procedures will be extremei:g difficult. Clay
- ~ .
in o neral is composed of very fine particles and has a massive structure that is
almrst, imperv°_ons to air and water. It may also be lo.r in nitrogen. Clay also j
lacks the organisms and tha organic matter that is indicative of fertile, productive
i
i
soils capable of supporting vegetation,
Reclamation efforts should therefore include but not limited to the follo:~r_ng °
^ Gheck opp rop pia ~e category
