quality of water in groundwater systems both during and after the mining operation will
be minimized? (Section 34-32.5-116(4)(h); Rule 3.1.6). Specific concerns are as
follows:
• Exposure of the groundwater table;
• Compliance with applicable Colorado water laws and regulations governing
injury to existing water rights;
• Potential impacts to water quality including magnesium chloride used on the
roads.
B. Has the Applicant indicated the projected amount from each source of water to
supply the project water requirements for the mining operation and reclamation plan?
(Rule 6.4.7(4))
C. Have all affected lands been identified? (Rule 6.4.1)
Issue 7(A), Minimization of Disturbances to Hydrologic Balance. Section 34-32.5-
116(4)(h) and Rule 3.1.6 requires an applicant to minimize disturbances to the hydrologic
balance of the affected land and of the surrounding area and to the quantity or quality of
surface and groundwater systems during mining and reclamation. As described in the
Division's "Rationale for Recommendation of Approval" ("Rationale"), the Applicant
will minimize impacts to existing hydrology by mining no deeper than 40 feet below the
existing surface where depth to water at the site varies from approximately 55 to 65 feet
below the surface. The Applicant will also mine at a grade upward from the current edge
of mining so that the mining floor at the conclusion of mining will be approximately 5.5
feet higher than at the beginning. The Applicant will also monitor groundwater levels
during mining to ensure that the mine floor is at least two feet above the groundwater
Thompson Properties
M-1983-102
