ososz
5.0 Environmental Analysis
5.1 Geologic Hazards and Mitigation
Banks and Gesso, LLC
A search of the Routt County GIS system revealed geologic hazards (potentially
unstable slopes) in the area. These areas are located on the eastern and southern
parts of the proposed permit boundary in areas of dense vegetation. From
experience with the existing mining operation, these hazards have not been found to
create any problems since there is no mining anywhere near these hazard areas.
The future operation will also stay away from these potential hazard areas.
5.2 Hydrologic Hazards and Mitigation
A search of the Routt County GIS revealed no hydrologic hazards within the
proposed permit boundary. The FEMA FIRM for this area shows no flood prone
areas within the permit boundary.
5.3 Wildlife Impacts and Mitigation
A search of the Routt County GIS showed the Greater Sage Grouse as the only
species found to be located within the proposed permit boundary that is of concern to
the Division of Wildlife. This operation does not expect to have any negative impacts
on the habitat, food source or breeding of these birds, since the Sage Grouse habitat
covers a large amount of area and this site is only a small percentage of the total. In
addition, reclamation and any required mitigation will closely follow completion of
mining activities, thus limiting long-term disturbance to Grouse habitat
The applicant has contacted the Division of Wildlife concerning this Sage Grouse
habitat area and is waiting for recommendations about mitigation techniques.
5.4 Wildfire Hazards and Mitigation
No wildfire hazards were found for this area in the Routt County GIS.
5.5 Soils: Erosion Control Management Practices
The six-foot screening berms located around the mined areas will be seeded to
prevent erosion. Mined slopes will be reclaimed and reseeded as soon as possible
(typically within one year of completing mining activities). The site will be graded to
ensure all stormwater is directed into the mined area, where it will then seep or
evaporate.
King Mountain Sand & Gravel Mine February 2006
King Mountain Gravel, LLC Page S
