72 March /996
Ms. Kathleen Sullivan
page 2 oj2
A sample was collected from Pond E, Outfall 006A in addition to CYVCC's normal sampling schedule on February
21, 1996 by Mr. Kent Gorham. Only enough sample was collected to run the analysis for Settleable Solids (SS).
Reported values for SS on the enclosed DMR include this sample result (8 mVVhr). The resulting 4 ml/I/hr 30-day
average value, is not reported as an exceedence on the enclosed DMR as there are no limitations applicable to SS
unless alternative limitations are claimed for [he outfall. In accordance with our phone conversation March 21,
1996, since no other effuent limitations were exceeded during the reporting period there is no reason to claim
alternative limits apply in this instance. In the future, CYVCC will take steps to ensure adequate sample volume is
obtained to allow all parameters of interest to be evaluated in the event compliance samples are being collected by
outside agencies.
The high SS value was due to a culvert installed late last fall which discharged close to the outlet of the pond and
caused short circuiting. This problem did not become evident until runoff commenced during the week of Mr.
Gorham's inspection. The culvert was plugged on February 24, 1996 and drainage directed to the upper reaches of
Pond E to allow sufficient detention time for settling. A sample collected March 4, 1996 indicates that TSS and SS
are in compliance with permit effluent limitations.
Outfalls 002A, 004A, 007A, OOSA, 009A, 01 OA, 016A, and 017A did not discharge during the period.
