~_
cost effective process for cyanide destruction today and is the
only reliable process for slurry treatment. At the end of 1990,
there were 32 licenses for the Inco SO,/Air cyanide destruction
technology in North America.
PLANT PERFORMANCE
CIP. CIL or Reoulaed Tailings
The Into SO~lAir process is suited for the removal of
cyanide from carbon in pulp (CIP), or carbon in leach (CIL.) or
repulped leach tailings. This is because reagent consumption iS
virtually unaffected by sulfide and oxide ores.
Operations which ate currently using the Into process on
tailings vary ins size from 400 to 8,000 stpd of ore, In theca
operations cyanide destruction is usually carried out in singly
stage reactors equipped with suitable agitadoa mechanisms and
aeration. With a few exceptions, liquid SO2 is used as it is one
of the most economical and available SO2 sources. ~ For
maximum process efficiency, the pH is controlled in an
optimum range which is dependent on feed solution chemistry
and type of ore present in the feed pulp. Typical results are
shown in Table 1.
Table 1: Slurry Treatment Results
(35-50 wt 4o solids)
• Feed (mg(L) 100 - 50 CNT
10 -250 Cu
5-20 Fe
• Treated Sluny (mg/L) 0.1 - 10 CNT
0.2 - 10 Cu
0.1 - 0.5 Fe
• Reagents 3 - 6 g SO~(g CNT
2-4glime/g CNT
0 - 20 mg/L Cu~*
2
