HALL IRWIN COMPANIEs1 PAGE 3
BAILEY PIT -TECHNICAL REvIs10N
SEPTEMBER 23, 199B
We will replace the 500 RO trees, with 250 native willows,
100 chokecherrys, 100 native plums and 50 native Cotton-
woods. The willow will be planted along the normal water
line on the southeastern sides of the lakes to reduce bank
erosion. The chokecherry and native Plum will be bare root
stock available from the Colorado State Forest Services thru
their seedling tree program. The willow and cottonwoods
will come from cutting obtained on the site. in addition,
we will replace the cottonless Cottonwood with native Cot-
tonwood so all species will be the same. The plan to seed
the current, gooseberry and skunkbush will remain unchanged.
4 ) NUMBER OF TREES SURVNING - The willow will be planted along the
banks of the lake using stakes similar to those required in
the ACOE 404 permit. The cottonwoods, skunkbush, and cur-
rent will be planted as show on the reclamation map submit-
ted in 1991 . This can be done by enlarging each planting
area by a proportional number. We typically find that the
survival rates for the shrubs average 60 percent and for
cottonwoods 40 percent. The willow if planted correctly and
are not eaten by varmints will average 80%. The table below
shows the number of trees planted under the revised plan,
their survival rate and the number needed to successfully
complete reclamation. In the areas where the clumps of
trees are planted no grass seed will be sown. This will
improve the chances of survival of the woody plants so they
do not have to compete with the grass during the important
early growth stage.
Species Number Survival
Planted Percent Surviving
Cottonwood 350 40.0% 140
Native Plum 100 60.0% 60
Chokecherry 100 60.0% 60
Willow 250 80.0% 200
Totals 800 460
5 ) SEED MIX CHANGE - We are making the proposed grass seed mix
change to better facilitate the requirements in the M.L.R.B.
permit and the ACOE permit. This mix is an adaptation of
the existing mix with an addition of two wetland grasses to
enhance the areas around the lake and river. we reduced the
amount of Western Wheatgrass and removed the Tall Wheatgrass
entirely. This mix will provide approximately 51 seeds per
