' The seed mixture will be broadcast on the site within a week or two
' oP the completion of grading or soil placement. Experience has shown
that delaying beyond that period of time results in a reduced initial
' growth. Because it is expected the grading and soil placement will occur
during the fall and winter months, the seeding will be done in the fall or
winter.
1
The slopes to be seeded are north facing. Therefore, the us~a of
' mulch would not only be unnecessary but undesirable. A mulch encour, iges
the accumulation of moisture in the soil which, 1P excessive, can induce
' slumping. This was a very significant problem on the Vail Pass highway
project where straw mulch was covered with jute net. This treatment on
' Vail Pass even Induced some degree of slumping on south facing slopes.
Of course, here the moisture received is far less than is the case on Vail
Pass, but the retention of moisture can still be significant and induce
instability In the slope if mulch is used and the winter and spring are
unusually wet.
' The mixture shown above is similar in many respects to the mixture
I' that was applied to the steep, north-Pacing road cuts along the Piket•lew
Quarry Road. That seeding has been highly successful even though the
' parent material was the growth medium (no soil was used).
The second stage of the revegetation will be the replanting of trees
' on the slopes. The original vegetation of the slope was composed larl;ely
of trees. Tree planting will be done using Colorado State Forest Service
' containerized trees and planting will occur at the rate of about 125 trees
per acre in a roughly randomized pattern. Species to be used will be
' Douglas Fir and Ponderosa Pine. Although Phan Pine might be
appropriate in some respects, it is felt the north facing aspect would be
marginal for Pinon Pine In wet years, but suitable Por Douglas Fir and
' Ponderosa Plne In most years. The forest above the road is composed oP
1

~~
17
1
