~i
Mr. Brian Munson
Mined Land Reclamation
June 10, 1983
Page 2

Samples of the discharging water were taken and copies of the
results are attached. A discussion of the water quality leaving the
Bourg property is given in the letter to the Health Department.
Environmental damage resulting from the discharge is expected to
be negligible. Water leaving the property, though somewhat high in total
suspended solids, did not contain high concentrations'of aiy toxic or
potentially dangerous elements. The water did not reach the stock
watering pond located downstream and, thus, no receiving w•.iters were
affected by the high suspended solids. Walden Coal Company will clean
up the material which settled out of the water in Mani Dra:v thereby
eliminating the potential of contaminated runoff in t;ie future.
Malden Coal Company has taken, and will continue~to take, action
to abate this violation. The discharge pipe was relocated to pond C
as soon as it was feasible. Plans are being develope.i to Handle the
pit water and to repair pond B. These plans, as well. as a timetable
for completion, will be submitted to the Division in ~ timely manner.
Walden Coal Company firmly believes that the act ons it took to
meet the unexpected conditions were environmentally s.rund, but will
continue to do everything in its power to avoid simil~.r di~.;charges.
Very tru~y yc•.irs,
Scott A.
