Environmental Consultants, /nc.
July 3, 2002
Mr. Kent Gorham RECEIVED
Senior Environmental Protection Specialist ~UL 2 5 Z~
Division ofMinerals and Geology
215 Centennial Building Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, CO 80203-2273
RE: NOV CV-2002-008 -Golden Eagle Mine (Permit C-81-013)
Dear Mr. Gorham:
By this letter, Basin Resources Inc. hereby submits information and requests abatement ofthe above
referenced Notice of Violation for the Golden Eagle Mine. The following provides infonmation for
the points addressed in the NOV:
1. Failure to collect the annual water sample for CCAW-1, PAW-5 and PAW-6 -Bailing
equipment to sample these wells was lost in the mine during the November 2001 sampling.
As a result, the annual sample for these three wells was not completed until January 13,
2002. Miscommunication with the lab resulted in the short list ofparameters being analyzed
rather thatt the annual list. The lab is currently analyzing the annual list for the samples
collected during the May 2002 sampling for comparison purposes. These results will be
submitted as they are completed.
2. Failure to sample for iron (dissolved) for two semi-annual samples for CCAW-l, PAW-5 and
PAW-6 -Dissolved iron was inadvertently omitted from the analytical list for these two
samplings. This parameter will be added to the list for future samplings.
3. Failure to measure water level in January, March, and April 2001 for GEM-2 -Technical
Revision 52 to the Golden Eagle Permit was approved by the Division in May 2001. This
TR accelerated the monitoring frequency atGEM-2 from Quarterly to Monthly. As a result,
there was no requirement to sample GEM-2 during the referenced months. Basin requests
that this point of the NOV be vacated.
4. Failure to sample two semi-annual samples for the short list for GEM-2 -Basin does not
own the gas extraction equipment installed on the mine shaft at the GEM-2 location. Basin
had requested during 2001 that Williams Production modifythe shaft openingto allow bailer
access into the mine. At the time when samples were to be taken (May and November
200] ), the modifications were not completed and samples could not be collected. Another
request has been made to Williams and they have indicated that the modification will be
5231 South Quebec Street • Greenwood Village, Colorado 80111
Phone (303) 850-0930 • Fax (303) 721-9298
Web Site: www.greystone-cbnsultants.com • E-mail: greystone@greystone-consultants.com
