Box 483
Paonia, Colorado 81428
Attention Mr. William Bear, Jr.
PN: M99012GE
Subject: Geotechnical Engineering Field and Laboratory Study for
The Coal Mine Waste (GOB) Pile at the
Bowie Number 2 Mine, East of
Paonia, Colorado
Mr. Bear:
This letter presents the results of our field and laboratory
study for density tests of the lower portion of the Bowie Number 2
coal mine waste (GOB) pile. The field study consisted of
observing, describing and sampling the materials encountered in
three (3) auger advanced test borings at or near locations
determined by Mr. J. E. Stover. The approximate location of the
test borings are shown on Figure 1. The logs describing the
material encountered in the test borings are presented on Figures
2 through 8.
The field study included obtaining samples of the gob material
below an elevation of about 6005 feet. The elevation was
determined by Mr. Stover. The samples were obtained with thin wall
tube samplers until sufficient resistance was encountered to cause
damage to the tubes. When sufficient resistance was encountered to
cause damage to the thin wall tube samplers the samples were
obtained with a modified California Barrel sampler. The borings
were advanced and frequent samples were continually obtained in the
test boring until natural soil materials were encountered below the
bottom of the gob pile. The samples were returned to our
laboratory for moisture content and dry density tests.
The laboratory study consisted of performing moisture content and
dry density tests and Moisture Content-Dry Density Relationship
(Proctor) tests. It should be noted that samples obtained using
thin wall tube samplers and modified California barrel samplers may
experience some disturbance during the sampling operations. The
test results obtained using these samples are used only as
indicators of the in situ material characteristics.
P. O. BOX 3996 P. O.
