It does not appear that there is
enough top soil present now to properly reclaim that site. A
search is on with local contractors and property owners who may
have suitable top soil available for the county to keep its
commitment to properly reclaim the mining site. This effort is
headed up by the County Administrator, Robert Vasquez.
By virtue of this letter the County Commissioners are making
a commitment to the State Reclamation Board to meet the basic
requirements necessary to insure that top soil will be available
for reclamation purposes.
In addition the Commissioners are taking efforts to re-slope
the gravel pit in a way so that equipment can travel across the top
of the surface area around the pit area.
What this means is that the Commissioners have committed heavy
equipment to be moved in the near future to the gravel pit. A mesa
will be provided within the fence and boundary lines of the pit at
least twelve feet wide. This will allow heavy equipment to do the
work necessary to reclaim this property in the future. It will
also allow equipment to get into areas where additional material
may be necessary to protect the integrity of the boundaries and or
the slope of the pit.
Please consider this memo a writing for the file on permit No.
M-77-044 committing the county to not only reclamation but the
continual updating of processes to comply with the Reclamation
Boards' mandates.
