Cattany, Director FEB 13 2007
Colorado Division of Reclamation Mining & Safety
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215 Division of Reclamation,
Denver, CO 80203 Mining and Safety
Deaz Mr. Cattany:
The Centennial Boazd of Education and Administration is concerned about the proposed closing of
the Battle Mountain Gold water treatment facility and the use of untreated water to irrigate the former
Shalom Ranch. We also fear that contaminants from the tailings disposal area may endanger our health.
The Boazd and Administration have grave concerns that contaminated waters aze going to
negatively impact the students and staff of the Centennial Community. Our student enrollment inchldes
children from San Luis, San Acacio, San Francisco, San Pablo, Chama, Mesita, Gazcia, and Jazoso. Our
school property is immediately adjacent to and down gradient of the ranch owned by Battle Mountain Gold
Company. The Centennial School District R-1 shazes a considerable length of fence line with the former
Shalom Ranch.
Colorado Law requires that we provide a safe environment for the children of this school district.
The proposed amendment may imperil our ability to carry out this responsibility.
We need assurance that the proposed amendment to the Battle Mountain Gold mining permit will
not, in any way, place our students and staff in harm's way by jeopardizing their health, safety and well-
being.
/Please respond to our concerns as soon as possible. Thank you./
Sincerely,
Michelle Gallegos, Presid t
,,.v
iana R. Cortez, Superintendent
Cc: Attorney General, John Suthers, Governor Bill Ritter
