RE: Fort Lupton Sand and Gravel Mine, DMG Permit #M-1999-120, Revision AM-1
Request for Technical Revision for bonding of new phases, and submittal of
groundwater monitoring data
Fort Lupton Sand and Gravel Mine -Golden Pit
The land area which will be the Golden Pit is located east of the original permitted area. This
area is shown on the attached mining plan map. The total permitted area is 34 acres, with
20 mine-able acres. The perimeter length of the slurry wall will be 3,790 feet. The average
depth to bedrock is 50 feet. So the estimated total area of the slurry wall is 189,500 square-
feet. The estimated slurry wall liner thickness will be 3 feet. The underlying material that we
will be keying the slurry wall into is Pierre Shale. There are no faulf lines running through the
property. This area will be mined and reclaimed as per our approved Amendment.
Fort Lupton Sand and Gravel Mine - Swincale South Pit
We would like to stockpile materials in approximately 10 acres in the southeast corner of the
Swingle South Pit. We will not be mining that area yet, but will mine it at a later date. At this
point, we just need more area to stockpile materials, In the Amendment paperwork, the area
was actually proposed as "Plant and Stockpile Location 3." At this point, the processing
plant will stay where it has been located - in the southwest corner of the original pit. We will
add a conveyor on the west side of the processing plant to convey the materials into
stockpiles in the Swingle South Pit, and a gravel road for access. Prior to stockpiling
materials, we will strip the topsoil and overburden in this area, some will remain in the area
in stockpiles, and some will be used for reclamation in other mining areas. Stockpiled topsoil
and overburden will be vegetated with the approved temporary seed mix.
General Information for all three areas
The processing plant, fuel, and chemical storage will remain where they are currently
located, which is in the southwest corner of the original pit. The original pit is surrounded by
a slurry wall which has been approved by the Office of the State Engineer.
Submittal of Groundwater Monitorinn Data
While we were reviewing all the Fort Lupton permitting paperwork, we realized that the DMG
requested us to submit "one year's worth of groundwater data" prior to installation of new
slurry walls. !n the adequacy process of this amendment, we submitted monitoring data from
May-2004 through December-2004. We are now submitting groundwater monitoring data
from May-2004 through January-2006 for baseline groundwater monitoring numbers prior to
constructing new slurry walls. There are three attachments related to this data: a map with
the monitoring well locations for reference, and two worksheets with the data -one has the
original data and more location information, the other has calculated 3-month and seasonal
groundwater average depths for all the groundwater wells.
We have not mined in any new areas during the time period of data collection (May-2004
through January-2006), and the SEO approved the slurry wall liner of our current mining
operation in October-2004. However, there are three other mining operators in close
proximity to our location who have started new (or continued) mining operations during this
time period. Directly south is the RJ Campbell Pit #1, M-2002-104; and to the north are the
NCCI Pit, M-2001-107, and the Heit Pit, M-2003-016. Some of our groundwater monitoring
wells are very close to these other operations, and the groundwater levels we monitor in
these wells could be affected by them. As we open new mining areas, we just want the
Division to have a reference of other operations in our area that could affect groundwater
levels. Other influences to groundwater levels include irrigation and precipitation amounts.
LMIFL-TR-GoldenH i I IOakley-013006. doc
