Segregated carbonate
masses aze present, but are discontinuous in the control section.
COMPETING SERIES: These aze the Minneaua (CO), Rocky Ford (CO), and Skilak (WY) series.
Minnequa soils: have a paralithic contact at depths of 20 to 40 inches.
Rocky Ford soils: have 1 to 10 percent calcium carbonate equivalent in the C horizon and have an
overly thickened and enriched Ap horizon.
Skilak soils: have less than 15 percent calcium carbonate equivalent in the series control section.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Landform: fans and plains
Slopes: 0 to 15 percent.
Parent material: thick very calcareous alluvium derived from chalk, shale and soft limestone.
Average annual precipitation: 12 to 14 inches, with peak periods of precipitation May through August.
Average annual air temperature: 50 to 57 degrees F.
Average summer temperature: 68 to 74 degrees F.
Elevation is 3,300 to 6,100 feet
Frost free season: 125 to 160 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing Minneaua series, the Tyrone
series, and the Wilid series. Tyrone soils have a natric horizon. Wilid soils have an argillic horizon.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium or rapid runoff; moderate or moderately
slow permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: They are used as rangeland, and nonimgated and imgated cropland.
Native vegetation is mainly blue grama, sage, galleta, cactus, and needlegrass.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southern and central Colorado.
