GB <br />04/2003 <br />MANVEL SERIES <br />rage r or ~ <br />The Manuel series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils that formed in <br />alluvium derived from chalk, soft limestone and shale. Manuel soils aze on fans and plains. Slopes range <br />from 0 to I S percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 14 inches and the mean annual temperature <br />is about 54 degrees F. <br />TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-silty, mixed, superactive, calcareous, mesic Ustic Torriorthents <br />TYPICAL PEDON: Manuel silt loam, grassland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted). <br />A--O to 4 inches; light brownish gray (lOYR 6/2) silt loam, dark grayish brown (lOYR 4/2) moist; <br />moderate very fine granular structure; slightly hard, very friable; common fine and very fine roots; <br />strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (3 to 5 inches thick) <br />AC--4 to ]2 inches; pale brown (lOYR 6/3) silt loam, brown (lOYR 5/3) moist; weak medium <br />subangulaz blocky stnucture; hard, friable; common fine and very fine roots; 20 percent calcium <br />cazbonate equivalent; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. (0 to 10 <br />inches thick) <br />C--12 to 60 inches; pale brown (lOYR 6/3) silt loam, brown (lOYR 5/3) moist; massive; hard, friable; <br />few very fine roots; 20 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; violently effervescent; moderately <br />alkaline. <br />TYPE LOCATION: Las Animas County, Colorado; 1,850 feet east and 25 feet south of the NW comer <br />sec. 24, T. 30N., R. 62 W. <br />RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: <br />Mean annual soil temperature ranges from 48 to 59 degrees F. <br />Mean summer soil temperature ranges from 67 to 76 degrees F. <br />The soil moisture control section is moist in some part in April through August; acidic moisture regime <br />bordering on ustic. <br />Depth to carbonates: calcareous at the surface but may be leached for 2 to 4 inches in some pedons. <br />Subhorizons of secondary calcium carbonate accumulation above a depth of 40 inches are discontinuous <br />and can occur at any depth. <br />Calcium carbonate equivalent: 15 to 40 percent and is usually more than 20 percent in most horizons <br />within the control section. <br />Electrical conductivity: 0 to 10 mmhos <br />Particle size control section: <br />Clay content: 18 to 35 percent <br />Silt content: 40 to 70 percent <br />4/29/2004 <br />
