~~
r SECTION S.0
MAINTENANCE SAFETY PROCEDURES
~~ 8.1 ROUTINE CHECKS
Procedures for inspection and maintenance of equipment and
instrumentation will be developed by BMGC. Tk~e following
list is not complete but includes some of theiitems which
will require regular attention:
^ checking belt tensions and alignment of driJves,
^ checking drive guards,
^ inspection of rubber linings in tanks and ~oppers,
^ inspecting and tightening of flanges in pipe and ducts,
^ calibration of pH meters,
J ^ replacement of sensing heads in HCN detector, according
J to manufacturer's recommendations,
^ calibration of HCN monitor in scrubber stacl~, following
J manufacturer's recommended procedures,
8.2 SAFETY PROCEDURES
J Specific procedures will be developed by BM~C for safe
access to and maintenance of equipment in the p Adjustment
System.
] Potential hazards exist in exposure of personnel to residual
concentrations of HCN gas in tanks and vesse s on which
~~ maintenance is to be performed. No ope ations or
maintenance personnel should enter any tan or other
enclosure in the Tailings pH Adjustment Syste until the
prescribed safety procedures have been carried ut and the
area certified as safe. At no time should any erson carry
out inspection or maintenance work inside tankslwithout the
knowledge and presence of a second person.
} Procedures required to purge all residual tracesof HCN from
tanks and hoppers include:
~ ^ open drain valves to dump slurry to sumps,
' ^ thoroughly wash out vessel to remove all residual
slurry,
^ open access hatches and thoroughly purge the vessel
using forced ventilation.
J
pj/1517rp 012591 8-1
