Ford Pit CDMG Permit United Companies stated that, "The two pit floors will be
continuous on the same grade." (See the attached excerpt, Exhibit D -Mining Plan). The
implication being that the 30 foot buffer would be removed. This was done to facilitate
mining and crushing operations and to use the gravel resource fully. At this time, United
Companies proposes that the 30 foot wide buffer zone be deleted at the Hall Pit and Ford
Pi[ boundary where mining activity has taken place. This part of the 30 foot Buffer Zone
is located at the south end of the Hall Pit east boundary and is approximately 600 feet in
length.
The Hall Pit 30 foot buffer has also been mined at the finger ridge area mentioned in the
first part of this Technical Revision proposal. United Companies wants to delete the 30
foot Buffer Zone at this area as well, a length of about 90 feet.
Finally, the shoulders of the access road to the Hall Pit have been infested with
knapweed, a noxious weed. United Companies has a 40 foot wide access easement from
32 Road (Highway 14I) to the Hall Pit permit boundary for this haul road.
United Companies proposes to contact the landowner and determine what will be the best
way to proceed. The noxious weed species, as a group, are difficult to eliminate.
Effective control of the knapweed at the haul road will possibly involve chemical
herbicide, light tillage and seeding with fast growing grasses that can compete with the
weed. Recommendations ofthe Mesa County Weed and Pest Inspector, Judith Sirota are
also attached. These recommendations will be the basis for our weed control effort at [he
Haul Road area.
Control of noxious weed species is an important issue for United Companies on our
gravel mining permit areas. At the Hall Pit access road the knapweed is growing in a
relatively small area. If we can get the knapweed under control in this area we can
eliminate the problem at this area and prevent the weed spreading to neighboring areas.
