the range is in excellent condition, the total annual yield
of air-drp hcrbago is 1;S00 to °,500 pounds per acre.
SALT MEADOW RANCE SITE
This range sits consists of deep to moderately deep
soils that hai•e a surface layer and subsoil that range
ft•om loamy sand to clay. These soils have a high water
table mid moderate to high salinity. Some areas are
flooded from time to time. In places water-holding capac-
ity is high, but the moisturre may be limited by high wn-
cettt.ration of salts.
11']irot this :ito is in Psrellent rnn.lition, the vegetation
is limiter( tri that tolerant of salts. 1)mninant species are
alkali sacaton, alkaligrass, switchvrass Western Wheat-
~rass. mul salt~rnss. lluiagement~is needed that encour-
ages tho groicth of switchgrass, nllrali sacaton, and west-
ern Wheatgrass. tiVhen the rnnge is in excellent condition,
the total anmtal yield of air-dre herb.•lge is 1,800 to 2,500
polmds per nc._,
SANDY MEADOW RANGE SITE
This range site consists of nearly level to gently slop-
ing, deep to moderately deep soils that have a sand or
sand}• lo;un surface layer and subsoil. These soils hate
n high icnfer table and, in places, are slightly to mader-
ateh• saline.
11'hen this site is in excellent condition, the dominant
grasses are tali grasses, principally switchgrass, indiml-
*rass, big blacstem anti, nt the Wetter spots, cordgrnss.
11-ben the range is in excellent condition, the total
annual yield of alr-dry herbage is 1,900 to 2,100 pounds
per Here.
CHOPPY 9ANDa RANCE SITE
This ran_•e site consists of deep, rolling to moderately
steep soil, that bare a surface layer and subsoil of sand.
The soils are dunelike. Loose, shifting sand unprotected
by vegetation makes up as much as 20 to 30 percent of
sumo areas. Capacity for storing moisture and plant
nutrients is IoW, bat the soils are Wetted to considerable
depth by fairly small amounts of precipitation. These
soils are subject to very severe soil blowing Where there
is not Pnou_•h plant cover.
Tall grasses, mainly sandrrerl and sand bhlestem, are
drnninmit When this range site is in exceP,ont. condition.
Other grasses are hairy rams, sand dropseed, '~loWOUt-
grnss, and beardgrass. 5~andhill mutely and yucca gtoW
in mall amounts.
1Vliett the t:'llige is in excellent condition, the total
annual yield of air-dry herbage is 600 to 1,400 polmds
per acre.
LOESS $REAgB RANCE SITE
Olily Colby loam, 9 to 30 percent slopes, eroded, is in
this range site. This strongly sloping to steep soil
has a surface layer of loam and a subsoil that rnn~es from
eery fine sandy loam to silt loam. Capacity for storing
moisture mid plant nutrients is moderate to high, but
