U

June 24, 2003 -26-
4.1.5 Permeability Tests
003-2203.7
Golder conducted permeability tests of SLF. Golder conducted eight permeability tests of
re-compacted samples of SLF at Golder's laboratory in Lakewood, Colorado. The testing frequency
(approximately one test per 3,827 cubic yards) exceeded the minimum specified testing frequency of
one test per 5,000 cubic yards. Testing was performed with aflexible-wall permeameter with
back-pressure saturation and a constant rate of flow (ASTM D5084, Method D). The fill was
re-compacted to the in-place density measured during nuclear density tests and the corresponding
moisture content (as determined from oven-dried samples). The nuclear density value measured in
the field was corrected for coarse particles according to ASTM D4718. Laboratory tests yielded
coefficients of permeability for the CQA samples from 2.8 x 10'~cm/sec to 1.4 x 10'scm/sec, all of
which are less than the specified maximum permeability of 1 x 10~ cm/sec. The permeability test
results for the SLF are presented in Appendix I-3 and summarized in Table 9.
4.1.6 Bulk Specific Graviri
Golder conducted a bulk specific gravity test of SLF at Golder's laboratory in Lakewood, Colorado.
Testing was performed in accordance with ASTMC127 for performing rock corrections to the
Proctor compaction tests.
4.2 Field Testing and Monitoring
Golder observed al] fill operations in the Phase Nb PSSA to verify, when necessary, lift thickness,
adequate compaction, and acceptable moisture conditions. Holes made in the fill during testing were
backfilled and tamped with fine SLF materials. Golder standardized nuclear gauges at the start of
each day's work according to ASTM D2922.
4.2.1 Underground Workings
Golder monitored remediation of underground workings, including verification that excavations were
performed to minimum required dimensions, and that CP, CR, geogrid, SF, FSB, and SSF were
installed as specified.
1:\00\E20J\M00\FUICertPS5A060J\OOJ330J.Oi00.0iJ~3Repdoa Golder Associates
