Mr. David Berry
Senior Environmental Protection Specialist
December 19, 1997
Page 7
28. Does Beaz Coal Company have reason to believe that groundwater within the
Edwazds/Clazk Mine would have elevated temperatures or conductivity values?
Beaz - No.
29. When was water first encountered in the Beat No. 3 Mine, in which seam and where?
Bear -Water was first encountered in the Bear No. 3 Mine in the B-Seam at
approximately crosscut 24 in the Third West Section. The water emerged from the ribs
and floor in mid 1994. At the time the water was discovered, Mr. Dan Bear met with
MCC representatives Mr. Scott Jones and Mr. Dan Meadors. Mr. Beaz was mainly
concerned with safety issues. MCC representatives informed Mr. Bear that MCC did have
sumps located neaz the water seeps noted in the Beaz No. 3 Mine. A second meeting was
held between Phil Schmidt and Dan and Basil Bear. Mr. Schmidt called the meeting to
further explain to Beaz where MCC was storing water, appazently for safety reasons. The
water seeps were not considered significant at the time. At the time Bear did not know
MCC was planning to convert the azea above the Beaz No. 3 Mine into a huge sump.
30. What type of extraction method (e.g., complete extraction, split-and-fender, etc,) was
used in the Beaz No, 3 Mine, in the B-Seam, and in the C-Seam?
Beaz -Two sided partial pillaz extraction was used in both seams.
31. Did landslides effect mining operations in either the B-Seam or C-Seam?
Beaz -Landslides Odid not directly effect mining operations in either the B-Seam of C-
Seam. Landslides did at one time destroy the main ventilation fan, and on at least two
occasions restrict access to the Beaz No. 3 Mine portal.
32. Were roof instability problems encountered in the Beaz No. 3 Mine, B-Seam and C-Seam.
If so, what type of problems were encountered and where?
Beaz - No unusual roof conditions were encountered in either seam. Poor roof conditions
were encountered in isolated azeas throughout the mine.
33. Produce mine maps showing faults, fractures, location, timing and amount and
temperature of encountered water in B-Seam and C-Seam in the' Bear Mine. Where was
mine water stored prior to or in lieu of discharging it to the surface?
