Mr. David Berry
Senior Environmental Protection Specialist
December 19, 1997
Page 6
Bear -Bear declines to speculate on the speculation of a mine fire.
22. MCC's PHC explicitly defines probable water movement within and discharge locations
at and in the vicinity of the Beaz Mine. Does Beaz and its consultant agree with MCC's
interpretation? If not, please provide us with your alternative explanation.
Bear - No. There is virtually no water storage capacity in the Beaz No. 3 Mine. Water
which flows through the Beaz No. 3 Mine will fill up the ramps between the B-Seam and
C-Seam and flow down the C-Seam entries. Water may then emerge from the C-Seam
fan portal or flow down to the B-Seam. Based on the mine water which emerged on
November 17, 1997, it appears the mine water found a way to flow down to the B-Seam.
23. Are there any connections between the old Edwazds/Clazk Mine and the Beaz mine
workings?
Beaz -Yes. There is at least one connection between the Clazk Mine and Edwazds mine.
The connection is a shaft located on the east side of the Clazk Mine workings. The shaft
was sealed when Beaz opened the No. 3 Mine.
24. Does Beaz Coal Company have information (i.e., maps) showing the extent of the
Edwazds/Clazk mine workings? Can MCC get a copy of this information?
Beaz -Beaz has copies of the Edwazds/Clazk mine working that were obtained from the
Division of Mines. The Clazk mine is the upper seam of the Edwazds mine (File#8).
25. Where is the minimum overburden thickness within the Beaz mine workings?
Beaz -The minimum overburden thickness within the Beaz mine workings is near the
portal and at the end of the third west mains (160-feet).
26. What is the minimum distance between the Beaz mine workings and the Edwazds/Clazk
mine workings and where is it located?
Beaz -The relationship between the Beaz mine and the Edwazds/Clazk mine is presented
on the B-Seam Progress Map (File #7).
27. Does water quality data from bedrock monitoring wells at the Beaz Mine show similaz
characteristics to the water dischazging from the Edwazds/Clark Mine?
Beaz -Beaz does not monitor any bedrock wells.
