' 6. Page 2: (rt the initial samples from the process (pre-decor, post-detox, and both
impoundment areas as well as collection pond), it would be valuable to have a
complete suite of analyses (TABLE 1J to characterize the conditions filly as of the
' start of recovery to 4 pprn cyanide levels. Following that, dte sampling on a
weekly rather than biweekly basis would give a better picna•e of irrcrernerual
' recovery progress. At the end of recovery, the analysis as per TABLE 1 would
then give comparative data relative to where the patds and process water should
remain as on-going activity under new operating conditions went fault (ijtlris is
' finally permitted).
RESPONSE: The critical parameters in monitoring the success of the detoxification in the
' tailings system are forms of cyanide, namely total cyanide and weak acid
dissociable cyanide, together with the metal species which form mitalle-cyanide
complexes. In addition, pH value is useful in assessing speciation within "free"
' cyanide.
Beyond the above parameters, while additional data may be of great academic
' interest, they have little validity in the assessment of the perfon»Hnce of cyanide
detoxification efforts.
' 7. Taking REPRESENTATIVE samples from the impoundments may prove
challenging and there is little discussion of this issue in dt¢ report. The
stratification or si:on circuiting occurs in the ponds, drew a larger number of
' replicate samples and analyses Wray be necessary.
RESPONSE: See Harry Posey's comment for Page 28+ (No. l4 under the "Page-by-Page
Comments" section).
' 8. Page 5: Wllo takes die samples? Will there be adequate training pad supervision
to assure reliable adherence to a protocol for sample recoverp, preservation,
labeling, and [ranspor[ that is anything but trivial? What are theher•iodic checks
' on training to assure a high level of sample integrity?
RESPONSE: Sampling will be conducted by qualified BMR personnel or by a qualified outside
contractor. The purpose of the protocol document is to assure that accepted
' QA/QC protocols are followed during sample collection and Handling. All
sampling personnel will have the necessary training and experience in collecting
' samples and adhering to the requirements of the Protocol.
9.
