Archer
Sun Coal Company
10200 West 44th Avenue, Suite 120
Wheat Ridge, Colorado 80033
RE: Meadows No.l Mine (C-81-029): Second 9uarter 1995
Sedimentation Ponds and Northwest Sediment Traa Inspection
Report.
Dear Bryan:
The inspection of the above referenced items took place on
31May1995 and 1June1995, and was timed so as to coincide
with conversion of the Northwest Sediment Trap to a water
control/diversion dike.
Lower Sedimentation Pond No.l
1. Structural Weakness - None.
2. Erosion and Veeetation - No rill or gully development is
present on the upstream and downstream slopes of the
embankment. Although the break in the lateral above and
east of the pond was repaired following the first quarter
inspection, the unusual amount of precipitation during
April and May has caused reopening of the break and
subsequent erosion of the rill on the eastern pond bank.
Vegetation on the pond embankment and pond slopes
reflects the positive influence of an unusually wet
spring season.
3. Hazardous and Potentially Hazardous Conditions - No
hazardous conditions exist, however a potentially
hazardous condition has developed where a lateral joins
the pond near to the emergency spillway, clastic deposits
in the lateral bottom have elevated the lateral to within
10-12 inches of the spillway bottom. This clastic deposit
should he removed, thus reestablishing vertical separation
between the lateral and spillway.
4. Sediment Level - The water level in the pond is 4.5 feet
below the top of the riser on the primary dewatering
device. Maximum water depth to the pond bottom was
measured at 5.8 feet, hence, the sediment level is 10.3
Feet below the top of tl~e riser.
