As mentioned above, water will be withdrawn from the Columbia Ditch in existing takeoff ditches
~} which lead to the Alma Placer property. These ditches will be used to supply either or both of the
operations.
5. Groundwater
The proposed operations aze in recent gravels of the upper reaches of the Middle Fork of the South
Platte River. The azea was glaciated in the last ice age and moraine deposits aze also prevalent
throughout the drainage basin to Fairplay. The gravels aze approximately 15 to 50 feet thick in the
permit azea and aze underlain by Pennslvanian sandstones and shales that have been tamed upwazd at
steep angles. The gravels are interbedded with conglomerate, sand and clay beds located above the
bedrock. The alluvium immediately above the bedrock is most likely to have the highest
wncentration of alluvial gold. Upstream from the permit area, the mountains of the Mosquito Range
aze schist, gneiss and intrnsive granite of Pre-Cambrian age.
.! Groundwater is generally found at River level in the permit azea and will be encountered in the gold
mining operation in the cuts shown on Map C-2.. It is expected that excavation in the cuts east of
Highway 9 will reveal the old river channel alluvium and water will be pumped into the seepage pond
system as described in the mine plan. Since this water will seep back into the ground, no gravel well
permit is needed.
The water quality of the water in the alluvial gravel is good with acceptable pH, low dissolved solids and
virtually no suspended solids. The lode gold deposits and old mines upstream have not contributed significant
acid water and/or heavy metals or other ions of concern downstream.
There aze no wells within the permit azea and only one within 600 feet of the permit boundary. This
well is owned by lim Kirschvink and is located immediately south of town at the southeast corner of
the intersection of Singleton Rd and Highway 9. This well is used for domestic use at the Kirschvink
house and is completed in the shallow alluvium of the river immediately east of the dwelling.
