June 20, 2006
Mountain View Gravel Pit
Permit # M-1981-002
High Wall Stabilization Plan
In response to the high wall erosion issue related to the Mountain View
gravel pit identified by the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology the
Town of Crested Butte proposes the following stabilization plan.
Existing Slope Condition
The existing slope of the gravel pit high wall is in a range from 45 to 70
degrees. The Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology has identified that
the steepest part of the wall is eroding and starting to encroach off the site
into the adjacent Colorado State Highway 135 right of way. The problematic
portion of the pit which is the center 900 to 1000 feet of the pit wall is close
to 70 degrees. The south and north ends of the pit are not eroding and will
not be stabilized at this point. The attached map denotes the limits of work
on the site.
Proposed stabilization plan
The proposal is to lower the height of the high wall and to lessen the slope
by excavating the top of the hill and moving the material down the face of
the wall to repose at the bottom of the slope. The intent would be to build
up this material thicker from the toe of the slope to a lesser degree at the top.
The result of lowering and re-grading the slope would be to achieve a 2 to 1
slope. See the attached cross sections. Material will be moved from the ends
of the stabilization project to the middle to achieve a balance of cutting and
filling on the site. The cut at the top of the hill will partially be on Town of
Crested Butte property and partly on State Highway 135 right of way. The
Colorado Department of Transportation has made a site visit and has
endorsed the plan. The attached cross sections reflect the existing condition
and the proposed new slope.
