Cattany
Acting Division Director
Re: MMM /Chambers Pit, Permit No. M-1979-205, Receipt of Water Augmentation ~
Documentation and Abatement of Noted Piob/ems.
Dear Mr. Johnson:
Staff has received United's documentation concerning noted water issues at the above
referenced site. The supplied documentation is sufficient to abate the noted problems
from the 5/20/03 and 3/15/02 inspections concerning the exposure of groundwater and
the commitment to mining only 4 acres at a time. The Division asks respectfully for a
copy of the final well permit approval as soon as United completes the process.
This Office will soon under take a review of the Financial Warranty to ensure that the
amount in place is sufficient to cover final reclamation costs. Staff assumes that United
will continue to mine Phase III as is presently. The Bond will reflect cost to turn Phase II
and III into a pond as originally approved. The bond will no longer need to reflect
backfilling of the pit as required in the past.
If you need additional information, please contact me at the Division of Minerals and
Geology, Grand Junction Field Office, 101 S. 3rd St., Suite 301, Grand Junction, Colorado
81501, telephone no. 970.241.1 1 17.
Sincerely,
G.
