Box 466
Silverton, Colorado 81433
Division of Minerals and Geology
701 Camino del Rio, Room 125
Durango, Colorado 81301
ATTN: Wally Erickson
RE: Eureka Gravel Pit #M-1990-070
~~~
®~ ~~~'®
burangc Field Once
Division of Mirerals ~ Geology
June 2, 2004
The Eureka gravel pit in San Juan County was active in 2003, In June and July of
2003 San Juan County had about 6000 tons of gravel crushed at the pit. The
county had hauled in about 3000 tons of material from the edge of the roads and
from a roto-milling project done in April 2003 the rest of the materials where
excavated from the pit area and some of the spoils pile from screening was also
crushed. The excavation was not conducted in the old excavation area but from
the area closer to the road. While the contractor was crushing gravel any of the
spoils where used as backfill in the old excavation area where the county has
been backfilling the toe of the slope a little since 2002.
San Juan County has stopped any mining operations at the Eureka pit 2003 was
the last year that any materials excavation will be done and only reclamation
work will be done in 2004. The County will still have the existing gravel stockpiles
at the site and these should be hauled off by the fall of 2005 or sooner. The
County now owns all the land where the pit is and all the adjoining properties to
the pit area and will to keep the current pit area as a stockpile site and gravel
production area if the County ever gets a permit to extract gravel from the river to
keep the channel cleaned out. This will be addressed at a later date!
The spoils pile will be dozed, hauled and placed back into the toe of the slope
and some materials will be pushed of from county road 25 to try and mitigate the
erosion and try reestablish a angle repose back to the slope above the gravel pit
if that is possible. The safety issues with CR-25 are being addressed and
monitored
San Juan County Road Overseer knows that the county has been operating
outside of the permitted area only due the sloughing from above the old
excavation area is outside of the permitted area. The road Overseer is behind in
all administration needs for the permit requirements and are taking steps to
correct these problems.
Louis Girodo
Road Overseer
