Most of the tailings were removed. <br />Tailings remained in the upland diversion trench. <br />A pile of the cleaned up tailings were located <br />inside the impoundment fence but not on a lined surface. <br />All additional tailings must be cleaned up and all <br />spilled tailings must be placed on a lined surface <br />inside the impoundment. <br />(3) East Side of Tailings Impoundment - Tailings <br />ponded on top of the east (lower) berm and overtopped <br />it along a 15' wide path down the embankment. The <br />tailings extended as much as 25' below the toe of the <br />embankment. In some areas, like the surface of the <br />embankment, dirt was sprinkled on top of the tailings <br />instead of removing them. These tails will need to be <br />removed and placed in the impoundment. <br />The Division expressed serious concerns about: <br />(1) Lack of freeboard in the tailings impoundment, <br />and (2) Lack of a stable foundation of tailings on <br />which to deposit a~di~iaaa~ tai23.nsgs. These issues <br />will need to be addressed to the satisfaction of the <br />Division. The operator indicated that he did not <br />understand the tailings deposition method in the permit. <br />8/17/94 P.M. Division Inspection- All spilled tailings had been <br />removed from the ground.
