Spryer, 8/3/01
2
TOPSOIL: Topsoil stripped for mining activities will be stored until needed for revegetation.
Topsoil stockpiled for longer than one year should be stabilized with perennial vegetation. The
grass seeding recommendation labeled 'Cooley Reservoir Mix A' can be used for this purpose.
Grass should be planted in accordance with the directions provided for best success in
establishment.
REVEGETATION: Land not covered by water should be graded to slopes not exceeding 3-foot
horizontal to one-foot vertical. Shallower slopes would be preferable for reduced erosion and
ease of seeding. Topsoil should be replaced on the soil surface in quantities sufficient to provide
the new grass seeding the best medium for growth. Ali disturbed areas not covered by water
should be planted to the grass seeding recommendation labeled 'Cooley Reservoir Mix B'. This
mix consists of the same grass species found torhe north and west of iiie lake and si~ould be
used to replace grass in these areas removed by mining. If the Tall wheatgrass on the south side
of the lake is disturbed, it can be replaced with more Tall wheatgrass by using `Cooley Reservoir
Mix C'. Grass should be planted in accordance with the directions provided for success in
establishment. No grazing should occur until the grass is well established which may take from
two to four years.
FERTILIZER: Fertilizer should be applied only after the soil is tested to determine rate of
application. Soil samples should be taken according to CSU Cooperative Extension guidelines.
Application of fertilizer should be in accord with recommended amounts.
WETLANDS: The National Wetland Inventory map of this area shows a potential wetland on this
site. In addition, many of the soils on this property are considered hydric, another indicator of
potential wetlands. Since wetlands could be adversely affected by this activity, we recommend
that the Army Corp of Engineers be contacted should any permits or mitigation be required. A
wetlands consultant may be helpful in recommending site-specific plantings Headed to revegetate
the site after mining. Another concern is the pumping of silt-laden water into the southern end of
the lake. This area is already functioning as a shallow water wetland with islands of cattails and
soil interspersed. Additional sediment that fills in this area may impede the function of the
wetland. If functional wetlands are part of the post mining land use, it may be preferable to
extend the pipeline delivering silt further north to fill in deeper areas of water that do not have
these valuable wetland characteristics.
THREATENED AND ENDANGERED SPECIES: There are a number of protected species
associated with riparian areas including Bald eagle and Preble's meadow jumping mouse. We
recommend that the Colorado Department of Wildlife be contacted to assess the potential impact
to these species.
if you have any questions about this information or need additional guidelines, please contact me
at the number shown above,
Sincerely,
~~~~~~~
Andrea Vialpando
Soil Conservationist
