This area is
within the historic meander of the river but is now completely dry, with remnant wetland species.
Sand and gravel constitutes the substrate and early successional weed species are abundant
throughout the site. Spotted Imapweed and scotch thistle are found throughout the area. Reed
canarygrass and purple threeawn are found in isolated areas.
Sandy Slope
This area is a single hill, possibly an old topsoil stockpile. The soil is almost entirely comprised
mostly of sand. The area is dominated by hairy false goldenaster, silver sagebrush, and purple
threeawn. Spotted knapweed is also common in the area.
Wooded with Weedy Understory
In the Expansion Area North this vegetative community was previously a frequently inundated
plains cottonwood stand with a willow understory. However, currently the soils are dry and
sandy. The area no longer has sufficient moisture, and the willows are dying out, with little to no
cottonwood recruitment. Spotted knapweed is common throughout the area. In the Expansion
Area South this community occurs in three areas, one at the northern boundazy between the
Expansion Area North and the Expansion Area South, one near the eastern edge by Brighton
Road, and one in the southwest corner just outside of the proposed mine expansion area.
Grass Forb Mix
This vegetation Type comprises most of the central part of the Expansion Area. The soil in the
area is sandy. This area is dominated by purple threeawn, spotted knapweed, and goosefoot.
Spotted knapweed and goosefoot are weeds; however, purple threeawn is not a weed.
