Following are
Bear Coal Company's responses to the DMG's inquiries:
DtL4G -Bear Coat Company has documented certain observations regarding
ureter inflows to the 8-Sears in the Bear Nc. 3 Mine. The letter from J. E. S[over
dated October 10, 1997 and the letter from Dan Bear dated December f 9. 1997
seem to present conflicting information.
The October 10, 19971etter (response number 3) and the t~ecember 19, 1997
letter t~esponse number 29) state that intlo~vs were cbserved during 1994.
Hoti:~ever-, the October 90, 19971etter (response number 1) iriclicates that the
inflows were noticed during June 9995. Please clarify this discrepancy.
Bear -There is no discrepancy in the 1994 and 1995 "mine inflow" dates. The
October 10, 1997 letter (response number 1) indicates measurable amounts of
water emerged from the 3`d west seals in June 1995. Response number 3 of the
same letter notes that in mid 1994 water emerged from the floor and lower half of
the rib in an isolated area of the 3'd West Mains.
The water which emerged in 1994 was a nuisance. It was a small flow or seep
which accumulated to the extent that puddles formed in the return. Bear did not
consider this a "mine inflov/' at the time. This flow continued to be a nuisance
during the time Bear was retreat mining the 3rd west mains. Bear sealed 3`d west
