~ ~ Exlri~it
.~
BATTLE MOUNTAIN RESOURCES, SAN LUIS PROJECT
CMLRD ADEQUACY LETTER RESPONSES
'~ 37
~~
3~
Pease describe briefly the diversion, sediment control, and drainage
crossing maintenance plan.
RESPONSE: The diversions, sediment control facilities, and drainage crossings
will be periodically inspected and maintained. The systems will be
inspected each spring and after heavy rain storms to determine the
need for maintenance or erosion control. Sediment will be removed
at least annually and placed on the active waste rock disposal areas.
Culverts have been sloped to ensure self cleaning but will be checked
for clogging. Erosion will be controlled through rbgrading or
reseeding as appropriate.
38. Please describe the chemical composition of the water~ontained at'
the collection pond and on the tailings surface. If he chemica l
analysis indicates that these waters are toxic to Ovate owl, Battle
Mountain must submit a plan to minimize waterfowl ~ontact. In
addition, a deer and elk proof fence around the collect on pond may
be necessary, depending upon the potential toxicity tow ]d]ife, and
to ensure ]finer protection.
RESPONSE: The_ chemical composition of the tailings water is pncluded as'
sled in the response to

concentration is less than 4.4 ppm. the recogrrizeo to icity level
for waterfowl for cyanide has been determined to be a proximately
50 ppm free cyanide. The State of Nevada has adopted th s number to
determine when a pond required waterfowl protection. T e San Luis
tailings water is an order of magnitude less that this tandard and
should not present a hazard to waterfowl or requir waterfowl
protection.
As discussed on page D-76 a seven-ft high fence will b~ installed
around the collection pond sufficient to protect wildlif and ensure
liner protection.

a~
