SPECIFICATION A
EARTHWORK AND CULVERTS
1. SCOPE
The work covered by this specification includes obtaining all materials and pertorming all operations required
for common excavation, for road construction, for placement of all fill, bedding, and riprap materials, and
installation of drainage culverts within the lines and grades shown on the Drawings. The Earthwork Specification
includes requirements for lines and grades, materials, clearing and stripping, foundation preparation, borrow area
operations, excavation procedures, handling and placement of materials, and quality assurance and testing.
2. DEFINITIONS
2.1. EARTH MATERIALS -Whenever the term earth materials is used, it shall include common fill used for the
backfill of trenches and bulk fill obtained from designated barrow areas for dike and roadway construction, select
fill, drain material, riprap and random drain rack.
2.2. STRIPPING -Stripping is defined as complete removal of sod, topsoil, organic matter and rubbish in areas to
receive earth materials, borrow areas, trench excavations and other areas designated by the Engineer. The
Contractor shall separate stumps and roots from stripped material within the limitations of the equipment.
2.3. NATIVE SOIL -Native soil(s) shall include the soil that is excavated from culvert trenches, borrow areas, and
other structural excavations that is suitable for reuse as backfill or earth materials.
2.4. COMMON FILL AND GENERAL FILL -Common and general fill shall include placement of fill where the
excavation and backfill is not structural and will not support roadways or other surface structures, excluding topsoil
stockpiles for reclamation.
2.5. SELECT FILL -Select fill shall include placement of fill for culvert trenches and around structures above the
level of bedding and foundation material, where the backfilled area will serve as a foundation for roadways or other
surface structures, and in confined backfill areas that are inaccessible to mobile compaction equipment.
2.6. BULK FILL -Bulk fill shall include soils, rock, rubble and other material with no physical specification. Bulk fill
shall include topsoil that is stockpiled for future reclamation.
2.7. EMBEDMENT MATERIAL -Embedment Material shall be the envelope of aggregate or select fill around the
final location of culverts, including the individual layers variously called bedding, haunching, initial backfill, and
foundation.
2.8. DRAIN MATERIAL -Drain Material shall include placement of coarse aggregate till beneath concrete slabs,
beneath geomembrane liners or in blanket drains that include perforated piping.
2.9. ROCK EXCAVATION -Rock Excavation will be defined as the excavation of material that requires more than
two passes with Caterpillar D7 or larger Dozer and Ripper.
2.10. PROCESSED MATERIAL -Soils that have been crushed, screened, and/or washed to provide a
specified fill quality or to provide Aggregate Base Course.
2.11. AGGREGATE BASE COURSE MATERIAL -Processed soils intended for use in roadways.
2.12. AREA D -The Henderson Mill Gravel Pit site where Aggregate Base Course Material, select fill, and
Processed Material will be produced.
3. APPLICABLE STANDARDS
AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR TESTING MATERIALS (ASTM)
ASTM C 33 Concrete Aggregates.
ASTM D 422 Grain Size Analysis of Soils.
ASTM D 425 Test Method for Centrifuge Moisture Equivalent of Soils.
ASTM D 698 Moisture Density Relation of Soils, 5.5 Pound Hammer and twelve-inch (12") Drop.
ASTM D 1556 Density of Soil in Place by Sand Cone Method.
SPECIFICATION A EARTHWORK
PAGE 1
