The area
is below the mountain shrub _one s~~ t4-~ey do n~~t he.ve tc~ brush it.
5~_~ine stripping had 6eer~ d~-one earlier in the week: prior t~~ snow fall.
One of t}ie pr~~hlerr~s on the mine with sediment ~_~~ntr~~l b~.sins in the
past has been the heavy accumulation of suspended solids in the
initial pond in t}re series be~_ause of runoff fr~~m raw spoil and mine
water t}-~at is pumped through t}.e drainage. The cc.mpany now puts in
dozer basins to tre.p and stc,re sedimen ~~n the newly stripped areas
and regraded spoils. Some Of those basins were being construe=ted on
the north eastern end ~_~f the Ashm~~re pit w}-sere t}-~e dragline, the
"E~aby D~~e", was c~peratir~g. Very little water was. r~c~ted iri t}-~e
nc,rthern er-~d of the pit. It was not being dewatercd during the
inspection.
F'ortic~ns of s~~me of t}ie rep=l~~irr~ed drainages were inspected. Of
those, t}-ie draw below t}ie Dierenger- pit was receiving mine pumped
water. fd~~ Na~ire Drainage also had mine water water flowing through
it. A11 of the newer' reclaimed drainages now have been topsuiled
before they are treated fc~r water management. Erc~sior~ _c~~ltrol
matting is t}-~en laid down „ver the topsoil. Ir. additic~nr ro~_4: check:
structures are set ire the drainageway c}-~anr~els in inervals determined
by the length and fall of the regraded slopes. The stru~_tures are
4:eyed in and lined with fabric tc~ prevent undercutting. Most of them
appeared L'o be stable wit}i very little maintenance needed after- they
were installed, Livestoc4:: waterinU tan4::s have been installed in
diversions along the rr~nt4Lrr that drop int.=~ the drainageways. These
are mine plan approved structures with an acre fc,ot or less rapacity
and no drainage greater than 10 acre in size. The inflow end of the
tank is the upper end c.f the diversion with the outfall being the
lower' end .•f the ditch. There does not seem to be any erc~si~~n in t}re
ditches. Mr. Agnew indicated that occasionally they F'~ave tc~ do
somet}iing with t}re sto..4: tan4; inflow ~~r- outflow stru.=tares but ot}rer
than t}-iat they have not encr_,untered any problems. Contours set in
c.n a t}rrec- percent grade are now being pr_rt in on a temporary basis
according tc. Mr. Agnew. He indicated that they are ta4:en out on an
incremental basis as permanent cover grows in ~~n the reclaimed areas.
He did oat mention whether they were going to leave the stoc4:tant::s
al~_~ng the contour ditches in or not but I assume that they will be
permanent since t}-~ey are nr~t grazing rep=laimed area at t}'~is time.
The fo1l~~wing ponds were chec4::ed:
East Euzzard 1 °< [standing water nc, discharge}
Coy~~te t standing water n~~ dis~_harge- recent wor4: was done can t}ie
primary draw dawn spillway, a leak: noted during a previous CLhfF-:D
inspection was repaired.
West Puzzard (pond #1? water in the pond 8<~rattail growth
4Jest C'uzzard rponc+ #}~? dry
" r:pond #3? ~c.rrie standing water but no discharge
N..
