Mount NOV 12 IM1
RE: Permit M-83-052 Division u- .funerals&Geology
Request for Disturbance Area Increase
Dear Mr. Mount:
This letter is a request for an increase in the current allowable disturbance at the Joker
Mine in Moffat County, Colorado. The current allowable disturbance as stated in the
existing Regular 112 Mining and Reclamation Permit M-83-052 is 11 acres. This permit
is for the existing Joker Mine and pilot plant northwest of Craig, Colorado. The original
permit was awarded to Marathon Gold Corporation (Marathon) in September 1983 for
operation of the pilot scale mining operation. The 11 acre limit was based on the amount
of bond that Marathon was able to post. The actual permit area is approximately 160
acres and the language in the original permit allowed up to 20 acres of disturbance.
Because Marathon was only able to post a limited bond amount the limitation in
disturbance was implemented. The l l acres includes 10 acres associated with the pilot
plant site and ancillary facilities and one acre of active disturbance. The current bond
posted for these 11 acres is $47,500.
Mining and Minerals, LTD II (M&M) is requesting a change back to the original
language of the permit which allowed up to 20 acres of disturbance at one time. This
would increase the current active disturbance from one acre to ten acres. M&M believes
this is sufficient to continue pilot scale operations at the Joker Mine. The additional
acreage for mining operations would be for increasing the size of the working pit. The
disturbance will include salvaging topsoil and removing ore for processing. M&M also
understands that with the additional acreage an increase in bond will be required.
The Division of Minerals and Geology is planning a site inspection on November 11,
1997 to record the current disturbance in anticipation of a recalculation in bond. We are
requesting that a bond recalculation include the increase in acreage. This will assist
M&M in planning their financial obligations and increase the bond in one lump sum.
