PAGE 2
4. The two air shafts have been sealed and are no longer
active. They remain idle in case they are needed should the
underground workings are reactivated or they are needed for access
to the mine for other reasons. The roads that lead to the air
shafts are used by KN Energy for access to their gas wells. The
road is also used for access to other areas of the canyon by
hunters.
5. Basin Resources is currently undergoing a remediation plan
for the elimination and disposal of all hazardous materials at the
New Elk Mine site. These materials include asbestos, PCBs,
solvents, unknown liquids, and waste petroleum products. There is
currently one PCB containing switching mechanism still in use in
the breaker building. This will be eliminated in the near future.
Acids, Cations, and Flocculants for preparation plant use are
stored in the plant building. An B-10,000 gallon sulfuric acid
tank may be added. If it is, it will be in a double walled plastic
tank. This will be located near the prep plant.
D. Maps
1. A minor revision will be submitted to bring the Eastern
surface disturbance boundary within the current map area. Revised
maps will be submitted at that time.
This is a partial response to your adequacy questions from the
letter dated November 5, 1993. Additional responses will be
forthcoming from Basin personnel and Grayston Consulting. Please
contact me if additional information is required.
Sincerely;
v
Ralph L ez
Environmental Engineer
