0
Meadows # 1 Mine
June 1994 Rill and Gully Survey
Introduction
Pursuant to Section 2.05.6 of the Meadows # 1 permit document, Sun Coal Company
is required to conduct monthly rill and gully inspections on the reclaimed areas of the
mine site. If rills and gullies (deeper than nine inches or resulting in excessive erosion,
sedimentation, disruption of the post-mining land use, or prohibition of successful
revegetation) are identified, Sun Coal will initiate appropriate repairs within thirty
calendar days.
Methods
On June 1, 1994 the reclaimed areas of the Meadows # l Mine were surveyed for rills
and gullies. The initial survey was conducted by vehicle and then completed on foot.
Participants in the survey included; Mr. Bryan Archer, Mine Manager, Sun Coal
Company, Mr. Randy Booco, agent for Sun Coal Company, Mr. Eugene Shearer,
P.E., and Mr. Michael Savage, Vice-President, Savage and Savage, Inc. The survey
covered the facilities area adjacent to the Yampa River, the former pit and stockpile
areas, the explosive storage bench area, and the sediment control system. Participants
were instructed in the defmition of rills and gullies. Participants identified observed
rills and gullies which were transferred to a master map for subsequent use in location
and repair.
Results
Nine rills and gullies requiring remedial repair were identifted during the rill and gully
survey. Two rills/gullies were located immediately east of the Upper Sediment Pond
#2 on the west facing slope, four were located west and above Upper Sediment Pond
#2 on the east facing slope, one was located on the west facing slope east and above
Lower Sediment Pond # 2, one was located above the lower lateral contour furrow in
the reclaimed pit area at approximately 414,000 N and 1,553,600 E, and the last
identified rill was located in the reclaimed pit area at approximately 413,700 N and
1,553,700 E. None of the features posed a stability problem. Several of the features
on the east facing slope above Upper Sediment Pond # 1 originated from surface water
drainage from the ranch road running above and to the west of the reclaimed pit area.
Actions Taken
Mr. Randy Booco, agent for.Sun Coal, is currently securing a crew and materials
(straw bales) for the repair of the rills and gullies. It is anticipated that repair of the
rills and gullies will be completed within three weeks (by June 30, 1994) by packing
straw into the features and selectively placing native rock to anchor the straw and
reduce flow velocities in the features.
