<br /> <br />COTTER COMMENT RESPONSES <br />TO JIM PENDLETON MEMO TO JIM McARDLE <br />DATED MARCH 17, 1983 <br />Pendleton Comment (1 <br /> <br />"The question of the toxic or hazardous nature of all of the existing and <br />projected waste materials to be deposited within the proposed piles need <br />to be completely resolved. Specific chemical and radioactivity limitations <br />should be imposed as a condition of our approval. Placement of waste or <br />sorter reject material in excess of those stated chemical or radioactivity <br />limits would require redesign and permit revision." <br />Cotter Response <br />Referring to Section 6.0 in Appendix E-4, it has been demonstrated that <br />the waste dumps do not represent a source of contamination for the creek. <br />The weighted average uranium content of the waste dumps at the end of the <br />• mine life has been calculated at 0.029` U30g. The basis for this calcu- <br />lated value is set forth below. <br />Calculated Uranium Content of Existing Dump - 0.02% U30g <br />276,000 cubic yards or 31.4% of total maximum waste volume ai; the <br />end of mine life. <br />50Y° sorter reject with average uranium content of 0.03% U30g <br />50% mine waste with average uranium content of 0.01% U30g <br />Assay of waste dump dated July, 1983 - 0.0248% U30g <br />Calculated Uranium Content of Additional Waste for Remaining Mine <br />Life - 0.0325 <br />603,000 cubic yards or 68.6% of total maximum waste volume at the <br />end of mine life <br />50°o sorter reject with average uranium content of 0.055% U30g <br />50% mine waste with average uranium content of O.OIY° U30g <br />Calculated Weighted Average Uranium Content of Total Maximum Waste <br />Rock Volume using calculated values only - 0.029% U308 <br />Calculated Weighted Average Uranium Content of Total Maximum Haste <br />Rock Volume using assay and calculated values - 0.030% U30g <br />`J <br />
