' Battle Mountain Ruoumu, Inc. i 112 Permit Modification
' D.3.3 Material Characteristics
D.3.3.1 Geotechnical Characteristics
The geotechnical characteristics of the waste rook, outlined in the
' approved permit, have been used in the design of the pFoposed waste rock
disposal areas. A complete discussion of these characteristics can be found
' in Secfion D.3.3 of the approved permit. A brief surtlmary is provided
below.
' The waste rock disposal facilities have been design assuming that the
Santa Fe Conglomerate materials may be deposited in y area. This is a
conservative assumption since the Santa Fe Conglomerated is anticipated to be
' the least competent constituent material of the waste roc~C. The presence of
the more competent gneiss waste rack materials in any portion of the facilities
' will generally improve the long term slope stability.
The engineering properties of the reworked conglomerate waste rock
' and native foundation materials have been estimated us' g classification test
results presented in the original application in conjuncts n with correlations
from the engineering literature. For end-dumped waste k, a friction angle
of 35 degrees and no cohesion have been assumed. A friction angle of 33
degrees and no cohesion have been estimated for the foundation materials
' beneath the waste rock disposal facilities.
' Section D.3.5 of this document discusses the stability analyses for the
revised South Waste Rock Disposal Area and Disposal Area B.
' D.3.3.2 Waste Rock Geochemistry
' The uppermost geologic unit found in the West Pi~ is the Tertiary age
Santa Fe Conglomerate. The Santa Fe Conglomerate is mposed of gravels
and cobbles in a primarily silt and clay matrix. low the Santa Fe
' Conglomerate lies the Precambrian age pink gneiss, and low the pink gneiss
is a biotite or biotite-amphibole gneiss (referred to he r as biotite gneiss).
t These rock types are anticipated to be the primary mate>~ials comprising the
waste rock and pit backfill material.
J aY D~ ~cet o.
