CO 81841
Inventory & Evaluation
Of Land, Water, and Related Resources
Requested by: Jim and Diana Watson
Assisted By: Fred Cummings
Location: NE 1/4, SE 1l4, Sec. 36, T1N, R94W
Date: February 6, 2006
Rangeland Management Specialist
Situation: Revised reclamation recommendation has been requested for the Amick gravel pit
site located two miles southeast of Meeker.
Information provided: This area has an existing gravel pit and is presently disturbed. Soils
106 and 107 have sufficient topsoil depth to warrant stock piling and use for reclamation. The
soils aze subject to erosion, if plant cover is removed and reclamation is not carried out.
Reclamation Recommendations: The following is a seeding recommendation which could be
used for re-vegetating all disturbed areas. The first three species are native cool season species
expected on this site in an undisturbed state. Blue grams is a native warm season species that
will provide an extended green period. Compacted areas should be tilled or ripped to loosen the
subsoil prior to topsoil replacement. The top soil should be spread to a depth of at least 6 inches;
if it becomes compacted it should also be tilled to prepaze a suitable seedbed. Fertilization is not
.recommended because the area does not receive enough moisture to prevent nitrogen damage of
the newly seeded plants and the site will not be imgated. Best results will be obtained by
drilling the seed on the contour; the following rates reflect the drilled seeding rate. If the seed is
broadcast these rates should be doubled and the azeas seeded should be dragged after seeding to
achieve good seed to soil contact. The areas should be seeded between Oct. 15 and Apr. 30
when the ground is not firozen. The fmal slopes should be 3:1 or less, the flatter the slope the
greater the chance the vegetation has 4f establishment. During. mining, the slopes adjacent and _
below the pit azea should be protected to prevent overburden or gravel from covering reclaimed
or un-mined areas. Because the pit is positioned on a hill erosion control structures or ditches
may be necessary to prevent pit runoff from leaving the site and covering the irrigation ditch
below or the surrounding fields. The reclaimed areas may require weed control the first growing
season following the planting; control should be delayed until the new plants have reached the 3
leaf stage. Control may be required in the following years; controlling weeds will give the
planted vegetation the best opportunity for establishment. If noxious weeds invade the site they
must be controlled immediately. The newly seeded areas should be deferred from grazing for at
least one yeaz and preferably two years to allow the vegetarion to establish adequate plant cover
and protect the soil,
The Natural Rezources Conservation Servire provides leadership in s partnership effort to help people
conserve, mairstain, and improve our natural resources and environment.
M Equal Opportunlry Provider and Employer
