Ms. Susan Morrison
August 16, 1991
Page 5
Section II.J of the permit discusses land use in the azea. There is no prime farmland within the
project area and no unique farmlands have been identified. Also no wetlands will be affected
by the activities in the lease area. In general the underground mining activity will not diminish
the land use from its current useability.
No significant air quality impacts are anticipated from development of either the lease application
area or the Red Wash Trace. Some localized, temporary reduction of air quality due to TSP and
gas emissions within the mine operation area would be expected. However, there would not be
any significant increase in pollutants over those currently occurring.
Previous mining-induced subsidence in the southeast corner of the current lease area has not
noticeably influenced channel conditions in Red Wash. Tension cracks which may have appeared
in the channel have presumably filled rapidly with sediment and accelerated surface water
percolation is not anticipated. Differential slumping over active mine azea in the LMU
temporarily impounds water during mnoff events, but owing to the drainage's tendency to
transport extremely high sediment loads deposition quickly fills such depressions with no
apparent nick point formation at gradient breaks.
The issuance of the proposed lease or the Red Wash Tract would extend the mine life of the
Deserado Mine by approximately seven (7) years. This would be a beneficial impact to the area
through continuance of job opportunities and economic base.
Bonding
Mining of the new lease will be accomplished with the existing manpower, equipment, and
facilities. No major surface disturbance is expected. Permits will be obtained prior to drilling
vent holes. Bonding for the reclamation of the drill hole sites will be obtained prior to drilling
activities. No change in the current bond amount is required.
