• 3) The leachate discharged to the North Fork is assumed to completely mix
with the flow in the river according to the following equation:
Qnf+1•Ca1=Qnf*Cnf+Q1•Clm
where
Q of =The flow rate of the North (33.9 efs).
Q 1 =The flow rate of leachate (26 gpm).
Q of+I =The flow rate in the North Fork after leachate has entered
(15,240 gpm).
C al =The concentration in the North Fork which meets the in
stream standards (ISS) set by the Colorado Department of
Natural Resources (1984).
• Cnf =The quality of water in the North Fork upstream of the
refuse pile during low flow conditions.
C Im =The maximum allowable concentration in the leachate
that will meet the ISS after mixing with the ambient
flow in the Ilorth Fork.
It is estimated that the above assumptions incorporate a minimum factor of safety of
100, which is extremely conservative.
EXISTING WATER QUALITY OF THE NORTH FORT{
The North Fork of the Gunnison is currently considered a Class [cold water aquatic
habitat and a Class II recreation stream. The water is used downstream for both
potable water supply and agricultural uses. In stream standards (ISS) which account
for these uses have been set for the North Fork by the Colorado Department of
Natural Resources (1984) and are listed in Table 1. In addition to the ISS, the C;t1LRD
• has stipulated that water quality in the North Fork be protected against salinity
increases such that the conductivity is less than 0.7 millimhos and the sodium
absorption ratios (SAR) of North Fork water be maintained below 3.
