PAR - C-80-007 - 3 - March 31, 1986
10. In a worst case situation springs, seeps and ground water flow
3 ~~,~ru^•- through colluvium may be intercepted; for the life of mine plan a
..,~ chart should be submitted to show when these seeps and springs may
"' be intercepted and how much flow will be removed from the Minnesota
Creek Basin.
11. What precautions will be taken to assure that when bore holes or
wells are undermined that inflows into the mine will not be drawn
from alluvial or colluvial aquifers that may be screened and in
communication with the overburden? When will these wells be
undermined?
B. Surface Water
Page 2-160 of Volume 1 contains a discussion of aquatic studies and
water chemistry that were conducted on the North Fork of the
,r~
~ ~,\,'~ . Gunnison and several tributaries adjacent to the lease area. A map
~ should be provided that contains the locations where the water and
aquatic samples were taken. This would enable a better evaluation
of the data.
2. Page 2-360 of volume one discusses stream quality in the affected
area in relation to 1977 Colorado Department of Health Stream
guidelines. Since 1977 the Department of Health, Water Quality
~3 Control Commission has promulgated receiving stream standards for
\
~.~,;the region. WECC should revise this section and provide a
'J~_'C~~ '~• comparison of pre-mining and current water quality data to these
~,~,.-
~~` standards for each stream in the affected area. A narrative
discussion of your results should be included. Table 2.8.1.N, Page
2-369 should also be updated.
3. Page 2-370 and 371 discuss seasonal variations in water quality.
Both sections reference the graphs of water quality contained in
the 1983 Annual Hydrologic Report. The data from 1984 and 1985
1 f,,,~~ ~ should be organized and displayed (graphed, plotted, tabled, etc.)

}
f'
~ and incorporated into the application to enable a reviewer or
interested party to evaluate the data in relation to your narrative
iy,~
~
,
~
i discussion. The 1985 data is important since it reflects your
maximum disturbance and mine pumpage experienced to date.

4. •~~
Decreed springs are located on map exhibit .8.1.F. However, the
app ication indicates that there are over 100 springs in the lease
~~,~.\ ~ area. It should be made clear whether WECC considered and studied
~9A all the springs or just decreed springs. Is there an exhibit that
identifies all springs in the study area?
5. The discussion on springs (Page 2-374) should be expanded to
discuss the uses assigned to these springs. Indicate the status of
the spring (i. e. conditional use, absolute, abandoned, in use,
etc.).
