the hydrologic regime if hydrologic monitoring has been suspended.
Deteriorated Monitoring Wells
3. On page 4 of the TR-34 rationale, BRL requests that the monitoring of boreholes DH-60
and DH-65 be discontinued since the boreholes have collapsed. However no other
justification is given for eliminating these two hydrologic monitoring stations. Please
provide such ajustification, including whether these two boreholes monitored an aquifer
and whether or not the data obtained from these two boreholes show that there have not
been any impacts to that aquifer.
4. On page 4 of the TR-34 rationale, BRL requests that the monitoring of borehole B-3,
located on the crushing screening bench, be discontinutd since the hole has collapsed.
The Division requests that BRL offer an explanation of why borehole B-3 is no longer
functional. Please comment on whether the collapse of borehole B-3 can be an indication
of geotechnical instability of the crushing/screeningbeneh fill.
Further, on pages 22 and 23 of the February 1982 Geo-Hydro Consulting report entitled
"Phase II Geotechnical Studies", it is stated that ground water monitoring of the
crushing/screening bench is recommended in order to ensure geotechnical stability.
Please explain why BRL believes the hydrology information from that borehole is no
longer needed. If the information is needed, please either restablish borehole B-3 or drill a
new borehole in the approximate location.
Remote Locations
5. The Division agrees with BRL in principle that the hydrologic monitoring of remote
stations can be dropped, as long as it is reasonable to conclude that the water resources at
those locations could not be affected by mining. Except for Spring 20, the Division agrees
with BRL's list of ponds and springs whose hydrologic monitoring can be discontinued.
The Division would like hydrologic monitoring of Spring 20 to continue because the data
shows that this spring was dry in 1999. Additional hydrologic monitoring of Spring 20
would be useful to see if a trend develops. Please comment.
Finally, BRL must ensure that these remote monitoring points that are proposed to being
dropped from monitoring requirements have sufficient baseline hydrologic monitoring, in
case mining operations are reinstated in the area. Please comment.
