This privately owned <br />sand, gravel, and construction aggregate mine is located west of the town of Westcliffe on Hermit Road. <br />The property described as the S W %. SW %. Section 16, Township 22 South, Range 73 West of the 8'h <br />Principle Meridian lies within an area providing valuable wildlife habitat, <br />It lies within the overall range for pronghorn antelope, elk, and mule deer. In addition, many small game <br />species utilize this rangeland area. Its close proximity to National Forest lands and the fact it is <br />surrounded by large ranches also increases its value to the wildlife resource. Our CDOW representative <br />in Custer County has observed pronghorn antelope using this azea routinely and during a recent site <br />inspection noted several pronghorn antelope using this property. <br />Our CDOW representative observed a very low frequency of noxious weeds on the property. It is <br />primarily dominated by rangeland grasses and surrounding areas are also relatively weed-free. This will <br />be something to mottitor not just during the reclamation period but also during regular excavation <br />activities. This is addressed in the reclamation..planuoder 3.1.10 (6). <br />If the permit conversion request is granted, the CDOW requests the following: <br />• CDOW has reviewed the reclamation plan and requests that the plan be followed during <br />reclamation of the property. <br />• If possible, new excavation activities should be kept to a minimum during the spring months <br />(May, June) when pronghorn antelope and mule deer aze fawning. <br />• Weeds should be monitored during all phases of excavation and reclamation. All equipment <br />should be cleaned thoroughly before working in the area. <br />• Any weed invasion shall be immediately reported and eradicated.
