ne pond at this time was approximately 1/2 full.
On May 11, 1985 Snowmass Coal Company purchased 1000 lbs. of Sodium Hydroxide
to add to the watter in the pond. This was done to see if the off of the ponded
water would rise. In addition, a pump was floated in the pond in order to add
oxygen to the water. The chemical was added with no apparent success.
On May 12, 1985 the field parameters of the flow was again checked. The
flow had dropped to 120 qpm, the pH was 3.4, the temperature was 7.8oC, and the
conductivity was 4250 umhos/cm. The pond was approimately 3J4 full and it
appeared that a disc harge was going to take place tomorrow.
On '9a.y 13, 1985 the pond water was discharging through outfall number 003.
These samples were collected for lab analysis. They were as follows:
U pstream North Thompson Discharge 003 Downstream IJorth Thompson
Field pH 7.3 3.4 7.2
Field Cond 120 mhos/cm 4500 mhos/cm 130 amhos/cm
Field Temp 0.1 C 7.4 C 0.1 C
Sus. I then called you and informed you
of the situation. To date, four more samples have been collected and are being
analyzed at the lab.
As the Situation now stands, the flow coming out of the abandoned mine has
dropped to 100 GPM and the pH has risen to 4.0. lJe are continuing too add oxygen
to the water and have purchased another 1000 lbs of Sodium Hydroxide to add to the
pond. tJe are hoping that this flow will cease in the next week or so when the
spring runoff subsides.
If you have any questions about this discharge please feel free to contact
me here at the mine office.
Sincerely
S~onesK.~Y
Environmental Engineer
