This mine was last operated in the 1950's by another company. It is ap-
parent that this water is coming from surface snowmelt which is finding its way
into the old mine. This water is reacting with the stagnant water in the aband-
oned mine and is causing the water level to rise enough so that it has punched
a hole in a mine seal and is leaking into our active mine workings. In order to
protect the quality of our mine discharge we piped this water out of our mine
and let it run to our Lower Washplant Pond (outfall 003). The following is a chron-
ological list of the events leading up to the time I contacted you.
On May 7, 1985 we extended a pine out of our portal and allowed the water to
flow to our Lower Washplant Pond for storage. We hoped that the flow would cease
so tat no d'scharge would take place. The flow was 250 GPM, pH 3.1, temperature
9.3 C, and conductivity 4500 umhos/cm.
On May 9, 1985 Snowmass Coal took water samples at the pipe discharge and
at the inlet of the Lower Washplant Pond. tJe wanted to see if the flowing- action
of the ureter was heloinq to oxidize the iron in the water. These results were as
follows:
Pipe Discharge
Field: pH 3.1 Temperature 9.3oC Conductivity 4400 umhos/cm
Lab pH 2.8 Suspended Solids 420 mg/1 Total Iron 312.1 mg/1
Pond Inlet
Field: pH 3.5 Temperature 12.1oC Conductivity 4300 umhos/cm
Lab pH 2.71 Suspended Solids 420 mq/1 Total Iron 301.5 mg/1
