These soils formed on uplands in clayey alluvium <br />or residuum that wa.9 derived from shale. T}te slope i~ <br />3 to 9 percent, and elevation is 6,000 to 7,200 feet. Thr <br />average annual precipitation is 17 inches. T}te average <br />annual temperature is 48° F, and the frost-free season <br />is 115 to 145 days. The native vegetation is mainly <br />plains grasses. <br />In a representative profile the surface layer is <br />grayish-brown clay loam about 7 inches thick. Thr <br />upper part of the subsoil is grayish-brotvn clay loan <br />and clay ntxrut 15 inches thick, and the lower part i~ <br />grayish-brown clay about Lt inches thick. The under <br />lying layer is grayish-brown clay about 74 inches thick <br />This soil is a soune of commercial gravel.
